Climbing, Climbing, Climbing
A Day For Climbing

March 2nd --- Day Two
This was a much different day from yesterday as we did not get lost once. Mind you John was waiting at each major turn to make sure we stayed on track. After a very arduous climb, there was John waiting by a fruit stand for us with lunch and big juicy strawberries for dessert. Locally grown of course.
Today, it took us 4 hour to climb a total of 4769 feet and travel 47.7 miles. I think we are beginning to feel like mountain goats. We keep reminding ourselves that this is not a race but a once in a lifetime experience to share. Lynda’s cousin, Lisa, gave us each a good luck stone to help us achieve this goal – Pam’s says BELIEVE while Lynda’s says Strength. We will need both of these
We left the Country Inn in Alpine at 7:30 am with temperatures at 50. But we were very warm and it was not hot flashes by the time we reach the top of the 5 mile climb that began outside our hotel. It took us 40 minutes to climb the first 1000 feet with grades up to 15%.
Our day was spent with mostly climbs, some serious, with gentle winds occasionally pushing us, and a few fun downhill descents. When the going got tough, we did stop halfway up the hills to take a breather. We even survived biking on I-8 for a short stretch. After getting off I-8, we turned onto Old Highway 80. The rest of the day was spent enjoying the scenic beauty around us as we traveled to Jacumba on Old Hwy 80.
The traffic was not heavy on hwy 80 and in most cases the biking lane was okay. Because it was so quiet as we rode, it was very easy to hear the numerous birds singing away. Also along the road, we saw numerous border patrol vehicles and even past a check point. Obviously they did not stop us as it was very difficult for us to smuggle anyone in on our bikes.
The Jacumba Hot Springs Spa was a very welcoming place to spend the night. We went immediately to soak in the mineral water hot tub. The spa is a place for serenity as there are no phones in the rooms.
