Beyond Hope
What a Day

Day 6 – Sunday, March 6th - 63 miles
John hustled us out of bed at 6 am so we would be dressed and ready for our free continental breakfast by 6:30. Being on the eastern edge of the time zone it was very light and made us feel like we were real slowpokes today. We should not have rushed because four miles down the road we realized the camera did not recharge correctly and Lynda had forgotten her water bottle.
Sorry no picture at the California/Arizona border!
I was a neat border crossing though as we had to walk a pedestrian path over the Colorado river. In the middle of the bridge was the sign WELCOME TO ARIZONA and the mountain time zone on one side and WELCOME TO CALIFORNIA on the other.
Another few miles and we entered I-10 to travel the interstate for 33 miles. This section of the road has a bad reputation as flat tire alley. We did make the 33 miles with no flats and found John waiting for us at the exit. Unfortunately John happened to say “great no flats”. A mile later Pam gets her second flat rear tire. John had gone ahead to scout out a lunch stop five miles down the road. Lynda and Pam pumped up the tire {as it was a slow leak} and tried to make the ¾ miles to John waiting for us at Brenda, the Snowbird Capital of Arizona. Repumped 1/3 mile later and arrived to an anxious SAG driver.
While we had lunch, John fixed the tire and tube and off we went again. 50 feet away flat again! A small leak at the valve stem grew into a bigger leak. The end result is that Pam has banned everyone from mentioning “Boy we were lucky not to get any flats”
The rest of the ride was uneventful until we passed a small village and soon realized that we were Beyond Hope. Boy is that true. Four miles from our resting spot for the night – we were beyond hope as the clouds open up and we had to ride the rest of the way in a downpour!
Our stop for the night at the Sheffler’s Motel in Salome, AZ could not come soon enough!
COMMENTS OF THE DAY:
Pam: Remember I get double miles for riding in the rain!
Lynda: Love the serenity of biking through the mountains and valleys which is so unlike the views from a car window!
John: Pam gets flats to test my ability as a STAG
