A Letter About My Trip
I have talked about my up coming, trip for some time and thought you might enjoy reading my sponsor letter.
January 2005
Dear Friends,
Today, there are more than 10 million Americans living with cancer and chances are you know one of them. Cancer touches us all. As a member of the Lance Armstrong Foundation’s (LAF) Peloton Project, I am raising awareness and funds to help the LAF provide the physical, emotional and practical support for people battling the disease. Please join me in supporting the LAF to help stop cancer from taking control of people’s lives.
Founded in 1997 by cancer survivor and champion cyclist Lance Armstrong, the LAF believes that in the battle with cancer, knowledge is power and attitude is everything. From the moment of diagnosis, the Foundation provides the practical information and tools people living with cancer need to live strong.
Your donation to the Peloton Project will help the LAF support people affected by cancer through advocacy, research, education and public health programs.
A year ago my son, Preston, fulfilled a personal dream and bicycled 3400 miles across America from Tillamook, Oregon to Coney Island, New York City. A month after his trip, Preston was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s disease. He has since undergone treatment and is in remission. Because of my experience when cancer touched our family, I have decided to bicycle across America from San Diego, CA. to Cocoa Beach, FL. to raise money for the Lance Armstrong Foundation. A friend is biking with me while my husband, John, will accompany us as the driver of the SAG (support and gear) car. This is my first ever commitment to a serious fund raising venture. I know that my goal to raise a total of $10,000 to fight cancer is ambitious, but with your generous contribution, we can make it happen. I ask that you consider making a donation to the LAF in any amount as every dollar will help this cause. If you wish, you can sponsor me per mile (a penny a mile is just under $35).
I have joined the LAF Peloton Project (my number is 200246066) for my fundraising efforts. Join me in supporting the Lance Armstrong Foundation in their efforts by making a secure online donation on the Foundation’s website. Your donation will have far reaching effects for those living with cancer, their loved ones and healthcare providers. The Lance Armstrong Foundation will send you an acknowledgement, a thank you letter and an official tax receipt. Tax receipts for online donations are sent to the person who was logged on at the time the donation was entered.
If you prefer to send a check or money order, please make your check out to the Lance Armstrong Foundation, put my Peloton number 200246066 in the memo portion of the check (see further details below) If you have any questions about the Lance Armstron Foundation, please contact the Lance Armstrong Foundation at (512) 236-8820, or visit the LAF website at www.laf.org, to find out more about the Foundation and the work your donation supports.
Please note that neither you nor the LAF is funding my ride in any way. 100% of your donation goes directly to LAF. I plan to leave San Diego March 1, 2005 and reach Cocoa Beach, FL via Howey-in-the-Hills (my home town) by the end of April.
My inspiration for this trip comes from an email Preston wrote on his trip: I achieved the nirvana I was hoping for on a stretch of highway between Gordon and Valentine Nebraska:
Picture gentle rolling hills stretching into the horizon under an infinite blue sky with only a hint of clouds. Crickets, grasshoppers, or locusts are chirping in unison all around you, and occasionally jump from the grass and bounce off your leg. The occasional cow ponders you suspiciously as you enter its territory. The feeling out there is remarkable --remote and serene, yet the road beneath you is a safety tether to civilization somewhere. With heart thumping, lungs expanding, and legs pounding like pistons, your bike moves effortlessly up and down as you weave through the rolling hills. With the wind whipping all around you, it's hard to imagine that there is a care in the world, or that there ever will be...
The fight against cancer is not an easy task, but an organization that bears the name of the man who came back from cancer to win six consecutive Tours de France can aim for nothing less.
On behalf of all those whose lives are affected by cancer, I thank you for your support. With your donation we can continue to help people live strong.
Sincerely,
Pam Hunt
P.S. Your donation does make a difference — more than 80% of the LAF’s annual budget goes directly toward programs, grants, education and advocacy that support people living with cancer.
