Cyclists raise money one mile at a time
Pam Hunt and Linda Reger became friends in Ontario, Canada 35 years ago. Today, they're seeing America together -- on a cross-country bicycle trip.
The journey is a way to raise money for charity. Linda is pedaling, in support of research into Niemann-Pick disease, a rare genetic illness. Her young niece Laura and nephew Alex both died of the disease.
Pam is also riding in honor of a loved one. Her son Preston, an avid cyclist, also made a trip across the country. A month later, he was diagnosed with Hodgkin's disease. He underwent chemotherapy, and celebrates one year of being cancer-free on March 12th. His struggle inspired Pam to take a long bicycle ride of her own.
"So I decided to find a friend who would do it with me," she said. "And Linda was retired too, so I really convinced her that this is what we should do."
The women have raised about $20,000 for medical research, so far. Every mile they travel will bring in even more donations.
"This is our eighth day, and we're having a hoot, it's great, I love it," Linda said. "I'm enjoying every day to its fullest, seeing the U.S. on a cycle."
• You can check out all the places Pam and Linda will visit, on their journey.
• Watch the women's progress at Pam's website.
• You can also make monetary donations to support Pam's charity, or Linda's charity.
