Welcome to St. Francisville

Welcome to St Francisville Posted by Hello

Day 39 – Friday, April 8th
Miles 49.4 Total Miles 2263

Our ride started by crossing the Atchafalaya River over a long, high rise bridge. This river takes about 30% of the Mississippi’s flow. Care has been taken with flood control and dams to prevent the Mississsppi from taken over this river.

At the base a quick left put us on parish road 418 where we were able to enjoy the backloads beside the Mississippi levees on the Mississippi River Trail. These levees are about 30 feet high, making the road we were traveling on below river level.

As we passed the Morganza Floodway, we were able to see its importance. With all the rain from the north making its way southward, this area was very flooded.

Heading towards the ferry for St..Francisville, we met a couple from NJ who were biking the area and enjoying the warmer weather. Within a mile, we met another solo biker doing a east to west cross country trip. Peter was from London, England and had started his trip in St. Augustine, FL We were the first cross country cyclists he had met so we had a lot of stories to trade. We told him that there were lots of cyclists behind us who he would cross paths with.

A short ride up and over the barrier levee and down onto the ferry to cross the Mississippi River.

St. Francisville was a welcoming sight with its old antebellum homes, plantations and live oaks covered in Spanish moss.

Pam and John head for the St. Francisville Inn (built in 1880) while Lynda and Richard head for the Barrow House B&B (one of the first house built here).
